Gday, been busy lately and spent plenty of time behind the wheel. That always makes me think of my old dog VB. I drove past my old house today where me and VB spent our time together. This was his story.
WOOOWIIT (whistle)... Here............VB................ Where you goin boy. Come here mate. I spotted him walking slowly at the beginning of a hilly cow paddock near my place. Here.................. Come here boy.
He turned around and slowly he made his way back. On our verandah he laid down, and sternly I said to him, Stay here, stay.
I was cut. VB had heart worm and was nearly ready to die. The months before he would follow my vehicle with the other dogs in it, we were going hunting. I had to wait for him up the road, put him up and take him home. He would stay then, because he was buggered from the walk.
Nine he was, he seen all the pigs that a dozen dogs hadn’t seen.
Later on that night I went out to him. What’s wrong Boss, I use to call him Boss too. He stared at me and I stared back. I wanted him to say something. I had VB close to my heart and to me he could talk. In his eyes, I could see his words.
Gord, it’s my time to go mate. I can’t go on; I'm so sorry my buddy.
I started to talk to him and on we went for hours.
Boss, do remember all them pigs you caught? Man I remember your first boar. You were a young fella then. You were lucky that big pig never ripped you apart and you were lucky you had your mum there too. Her and your father would of been proud of you mate. They were good dogs too you know.
Remember that big fella you and Apollo got that day? She was busted up bad and you and her and Jacko bailed that pig for along time before I got there. I knew you were going to be good after that day. Gees you showed some maturity for your age. Yeah you got them all in the end Boss.
He stared and looked up at me. Yeah Gord, that’s right. I loved it mate. I done it for you.
HA HA! Remember all them big dogs that wanted to fight ya? They thought they had ya F..d but nuh, all them big pigs you battled made you a tough bastard.
I lay there with my old mate and dreamt of him in my sleep. The young VB was strong......fit…....sinew.......tough.......hard and as proud as a lion.
In my sleep I remembered him a quarter of the size and weight of the pigs he was battling with. He hung to them and fought for his life every time. A lot of the time on his own I remembered. The pigs were big mountain scrub pigs.
I remembered him on his first hits and me running and thinking, Gord you F...n fool get him another dog. Not once did he let me down. He had glaze in his eyes when I got there. I reckon most of the time it was, “Look, hurry up mate.”, but rarely did he let go.
I remembered the big sucker that carved him to bits. His Chest plate was riddled and the pig was throwing him around like a rag doll and running over the top of him at the same time down a hill. He never took a step back. He shook himself off and flung straight back on. He never let out a cry or a yelp.
I woke up in the morning and he wasn’t there. I went out to the yard and he was at that same hill he wanted to go behind. I called lightly and he stopped and turned and looked directly at me.
He lifted his head right up to look at me and for that moment I seen the young warrior in him again. Just like the times I could see him in the distance when he was at his best.
I said to myself.... Go Boy... I love you and I'll miss you. Thanks for everything you have shown me mate.
I turned and went. When I looked later he wasn’t there.
I cried, I'd lost me best mate, and the next day I found him and covered him where he lay. Today I still drive pass there and remember him. He was the best dog I owned.
